Goffney wellness and Human work 201 Professor Smith April 5, 2010 African Americans 2 African Americans and the American Dream Growing up as an African American, I often wondered why shadowy state lived in old run down houses and clean masses had fairly houses. When my family and I would go out of town to have words relatives, we would pass by these exquisite houses until we came to where our relatives lived and I would chance on how run down their houses was. I would ask myself why their houses looked bad, diarrheal though the house I grew up in looked pretty good. I did not attribute it to oppression or racial discrimination or not being privileged or anything alike that. I did not know that certain groups like African Americans were not privileged to live anywhere that they wanted to in the United States or hold down certain jobs that provided just for their fami lies. But now that we live in the 21st ascorbic hot it would seem that things should be much better. African Americans have in spades come along way and many whites do and thus have great respect for people of color, but with distributively this progress racism and discrimination still exists here in the United States in relation to housing, homeownership, healthcare and jobs.

The Universal solution of Human Rights states that, Everyone has the right to a standard of living fitting for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and unden iable social services and the right to secur! ity in the takings of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of aliment in circumstances beyond his control (Mandell & Schram, 2009, p. 228-229). For many African Americans and other minorities, this statement does not mirror the hope and forbearance and support that it stands for. Owning a home, for instance, is a dream for many Americans.
